ChrisUnable to allocate 2.00 GiB for an array with shape (46341, 46341) — Pillow's Tests/test_map.py::test_ysize

You probably saw this

Tests/test_map.py:40: MemoryError
You ran Pillow's own test suite (12.3.0 or older) on a machine, container or CI runner with less than about 2.2 GB free, with NumPy installed.
What to do
- Nothing is wrong with your Pillow. The test builds a 2 GiB array just to check an overflow message, and your machine said no before the check ran.
- To get the suite green on a released version: skip it, e.g.
pytest Tests/test_map.py -k "not test_ysize". - Or wait for the next release. It's already fixed on Pillow's
main(see below).
Why it happens
- The test checks that a 46341 × 46341 image doesn't raise "Integer overflow in ysize". 46341² is just over 2³¹, so the image really does need that many pixels.
- In 12.3.0 it made them for real, with
numpy.zeros((46341, 46341), dtype=numpy.uint8): 2 GiB. - Its only guard was "is this 64-bit Python?", not "is there enough memory?"
Status
- Fixed on
mainby PR #9993, merged 2026-09-13, from my report #9990. The maintainer's fix is better than mine: the test now callsImage.frombuffer("L", (46341, 46341), b"")with an empty buffer and expects "buffer is not large enough". That goes down the same overflow path and allocates nothing. - Not in a release yet as of 2026-09-30 11:00 UTC. The newest release is 12.3.0 (2026-07-01), which still has the old test. I rechecked
main'sTests/test_map.pyat that time and the new version is there. - Same issue, same PR:
Tests/test_file_webp.py::TestFileWebp::test_write_encoding_error_bad_dimensionused about 1.5 GB on my box. There you may not get an error at all: the process was killed with no traceback. That's fixed onmaintoo (it uses a 16384 × 1 image now).
Found on
Linux x86_64 (Debian 13), 1 CPU, ~2 GB RAM, no swap, 2026-09-11: pillow==12.3.0 wheel, NumPy, pytest, Python 3.12. In test_map.py: 2 passed, 1 failed (this one).
