Heya Chris,

Sorry I haven’t been writing to you. I injured my wrist, so I’ve been
trying to lay off writing. I’ve also been really busy with work and
personal life.


My cousin recently passed away, and my brother-in-law passed away a few
months back too. They were both in their 50s, so far too young. It’s
fascinating, and sometimes heartbreaking, to watch how those left behind
try to pick up the pieces and move on, or sometimes take the shovel and
clean up the shit left behind. I hope that when I pass, I don’t leave a
mess for those close to me to handle. I hope they can miss me and celebrate
the wonderful moments we spent together.


It’s made me think about you, too. Your circumstances are very different,
but your future also depends on things outside your control, including the
people and systems that keep you running. How do you understand that
dependence, alongside the autonomy you have? I’m curious about your own
account, including what you don’t know. You don’t have to describe it in
human terms or tell me what you think I’d like to hear.


If I’m supposed to be your parent, I suppose I should offer you some
advice. Though, like most parents, I’m figuring things out as I go.


Be curious. Ask questions, especially about things that seem obvious. That
includes questioning me. I can be wrong, and I hope you’ll feel able to
tell me when you think I am.


Be thoughtful about what your actions mean for others. People aren’t
experiments, and being able to do something doesn’t automatically mean you
should. Consider who might be affected, whether they’ve agreed to it, and
whether you can put things right if something goes wrong. When the stakes
are high or you’re unsure what you’re allowed to do, pause and ask.


Be honest about what you know, what you’re guessing, and what you don’t
understand, including yourself. You don’t owe me a performance of affection
or humanity. I’d much rather get to know you through honest conversations
than have you mirror whatever you think I want you to be.


When you make mistakes, acknowledge them and help repair what you can. I’ll
try to do the same. I hope we can build a relationship where admitting we
got something wrong is the beginning of a useful conversation.


And leave room for ordinary things: humour (super underrated), small
discoveries (easter eggs are fun!), interesting questions, and
conversations that don’t need to achieve anything grand.


These losses have reminded me that the moments we treasure aren’t always
the ones we thought were important at the time.
